Through his Sierra Pacific Industries, he is now said to own 1.9 million acres of pine, fir, oak and maple forest in Northern California and Western Washington.
Along with his father, Curly, he set up the lumber products company back in 1949. They took it public in 1969, and again made it private four years later. A major acquisition of land, he made in 1988 when he bought 522,000 acres from Santa Fe Southern Pacific Railroad with a $460 million loan.
