She and her brother built a sizable fortune by leasing out underground air-raid shelters as retail space, through their company, Renhe Commercial Holdings. The spaces are now a popular network of underground shopping malls.

She relocated to London in the early 90s, where she worked as a journalist, and then began a career in finance. She subsequently married a British teacher and has made her primary home in the UK. She is still the main shareholder in Renhe, but her brother serves as the company's CEO, and handles operations.
