Jayme Garfinkel is a Brazilian entrepreneur who has a net worth of $2.1 billion. Born Jayme Brasil Garfinkel on November 30, 1945, he controls the second largest insurance company in Brazil, Porto Seguro SA. A Civil Engineering graduate of the Polytechnic School of the University of Sao Paulo with an MBA from Getulio Vargas College, Garfinkel joined Porto Seguro in 1972 serving as an Assistant Executive Officer. The insurance company was founded back in 1945, and almost three decades later, it was purchased by the Garfinkel family. After the death of his father, Garfinkel took over the company, and under his leadership, Porto Seguro has grown into Brazil's leading auto insurer, with about 4.2 million vehicles covered.
Currently, the company holds subsidiaries such as Azul Seguros, Porot Seguro Saude and Porto Seguro Vida. In 2011, Garfinkel resigned from CEO, but he still takes part in the company's daily activities as the Chairman of the Board. Moreover, he was a board member of Syndicate of Private Insurance and Capitalization Companies of the State of Sao Paulo, and of CNSP. Now, Garfinkel sits on the board of Consulting Committee of Fenaseg. Through his insurance company, he has funded the creation and maintenance of schools in shantytowns around Sao Paulo, which serve over 50,000 children.
