Son of coffee magnate Max Herz, Gunter Herz came into riches along with his siblings when they inherited their father's vast fortune. Gunter has headed the family's Tchibo Holding (now called Maxingvest AG) for 35 years before stepping down as CEO in 2002 and then selling his stake. Actually, it was a family feud that made him and his sister Daniela to sell their combined 40% stake in the company to their mother and three brothers for an estimated $5 billion in 2003. They invested the money in Mayfair SE, a private equity company that acquired 40% of the popular global restaurant chain Vapiano Group in 2011.
Vapiano operates in more than 70 locations in Europe, the U.S. and the Middle East. His two children, Michaela and Christian, occupy seats on the management board of the firm. In 2006, Gunter Herz went on to take over the shipping classification company Germanischer Lloyd.
